Airline crew help deliver baby girl at 42,000 feet

A Turkish Airlines crew are celebrating the safe arrival of a baby girl at 42,000 feet after a woman went in to labour on a long-haul flight.

Nafi Diaby suddenly had contractions while en route to Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso from Conakry, Guinea. 

The plane was mid-way through its journey when newborn, Kadiju made an appearance. Air crew, who are trained to deal with such emergencies, were on hand to make sure her first moments were as calm as possible — and took turns holding the little one who was wrapped in a scarf.

Ground staff at Burkina Faso alerted emergency services, and the pair were taken to hospital once the place landed. They're both said to be doing well.

There's now a question around the little girl's nationality.

The United Nations stipulates any bub born on a flight should be awarded the nationality of the airline, in this case Kadiju would have Turkish citizenship. But, this is at the country's discretion.

She could instead be granted her mother's nationality, or that of the country the plane was flying over at the time she arrived.

Either way, she certainly made an entrance!
