A Brazilian journalist has made a shocking discovery after she attempted to charge up her unused Amazon Kindle and use it for the first time in a long time.

Writer Mariana Vieira, 32, told local publication TecMundo she had placed it next to her window to charge it ahead of a trip.

It turned on, however when she began using it dozens of ants fell out.

It was then that she began getting notifications informing her of exactly what those ants had been up to.

"After a few minutes, I got a notification: 'Congratulations on your purchase'," she said.

Among the purchases was Robots and Empire by Isaac Asimov. (Clearly the ants are sci-fi fans.)

When she turned to her Kindle to see how the purchase had happened, she discovered that the touch screen wasn't working anymore.

In that time the ants had purchased O Anel de Gyges by Eduardo Giannetti, adding fantasy fiction to their repertoire.

She was able to cancel both purchases but still had ants crawling through her Kindle. Taking a friend's advice she placed the Kindle in a plastic bag and then in the freezer.

"I thought it was a little extreme, but as it wasn't working anymore, when I got home I put it in the freezer," she said.

When the Kindle came out of the freezer the ants had gone to heaven and the touch screen was working.

She has since advised others not to leave their Kindle's unused for so long.

One Twitter user shared their own story of an ant infestation in their device.

"The nest they made in my echo show," they said, along with a video of the ants crawling around the inside.

"I don't think they are smoked, but Jeferson Bezos' micro robots training to destroy the devices and you buy a new device again," said another Twitter user.

"Gone are the days when moths were smart," added another.
