Wife ditches husband on anniversary date for 'fat-shaming' comments

A man has questioned whether he accidentally "fat shamed" his wife after she abandoned him during their date night for his remarks.

Writing on Reddit, the man, 25, says he cares about his health and fitness and described his wife, 23, as "very overweight."

"I don't mind, I have encouraged her in the past to try to be healthier, but she told me to stop and I respected her wishes," he clarified in the post.

The man says the pair's anniversary plans quickly descended into disaster. Reddit

For their anniversary, the couple decided to eat at one of their favourite upmarket restaurants and caught public transport in order to save money on petrol.

The man recalls they drove to the station, parked and sat together until the train arrived.

"While we were waiting, one of my friends from the gym saw me and started to make conversation," he explained.

The pair discussed the diets and workout plans they were using before the woman - who the man says his wife knew before the incident - continued on her way.

"My wife, who was unusually silent, excused herself to go to the toilet," he said, adding that she took an "unusually long time".

"By the time the train arrived, she was still gone. I texted her, telling her that the train had arrived and asked her how much longer she would be," he said.

"I didn't get any reply."

His wife's disappearance prompted him to "call the police", but he received a message from her revealing she had returned home.

"Baffled" by the response, the man said he tried to "ask [his wife] what she meant", only to receive no reply.

He realised his wife had driven home, forcing him to order an Uber back home.

"I asked her what she was thinking, coming back without telling me, so she told me that when I was talking with my friend about fitness, it made her very uncomfortable about her weight," he said.

"So, I kid you not, she lied to me about using the toilet, and took the car back home."

The couple had an argument that ended with wife driving to his parents' house, when the situation escalated.

"She then texted my entire family, telling them stuff like 'I hated her because of her weight and stuff like that," he said.

"They've been blowing up my phone, telling me what a jerk I am and that fat shaming isn't cool. I tried to tell them my side of the story, but they wouldn't listen."

With over 900 comments on the post, Reddit users widely sided with the man.

"If she's just said you're fat shaming for talking with someone else about a common interest between you and then, that she herself isn't interested in, that's her problem," wrote one user.

"She's the one bothered by her weight. In that case, she needs to do something about it and not get upset and storm off just because you do care about your fitness and talk to others about it who share the same interest."

Another person claimed there was nothing "wrong" with what the man did.

"SHE obviously has a problem with herself," they said, adding, "your wife is unfortunately a major [a---hole] for lying to family members and throwing you under the bus! That was an awful thing to do.."

One commenter even offered the man marriage advice.

"You need an open and frank discussion with her on what her actual problem is because you weren't fat shaming," they said.

"She needs to realise that she can't punish you for how she feels, that negativity will push you away and ruin your marriage. Communication is the key right now and supporting each other."
