Why you should always go for the ‘party girl’

Ashley Kent

It recently got brought to my attention that a reason why I am so unlucky in love is because I’m perceived as a “party girl”.

I love to go out, whether it be a dinner, a gig, a bar, pretty much anywhere I can socialise — I love having a laugh and a wine with friends.

It’s the type of person I’ve always been. I was even handed the ‘party animal’ award at my year 10 formal. So, to learn that my love of being social is what is keeping me from finding love — well, it sort of really sucks.

But it’s not the first time I’ve been told this. I remember a moment from three years ago so vividly, when a male co-worker felt the incessant need to tell me exactly "why I was single".

“You’re too loud and out there. If a guy saw you at a bar and how confident and loud you were, they would be intimidated. It’s the coy quiet girls that men are attracted to, maybe you should reel it in and you’ll attract better men," is word for word what he said to me.

I’ll never forget it. I was so mad at him for being such a self-righteous a--hole, I just ignored every word he said.

But now the subject has been bought back up to me at the ripe old age of 26 — “he doesn’t see you as girlfriend material because you’re a party girl.”

To be honest, that's just a complete load of crap.

I can go into any situation and make the best of it. No alcohol necessary. I can speak to any type of person and have a quality conversation. And I am damn well the best plus one anyone could ever want. What exactly is bad about that?

I get it from my nanny, she is the exact same. She has always been the life of the party and at 78-years-old, she still is.

Anyone who knows her knows how fun she is. She loves to dance, entertain and bring as many people together as possible for a party – and she can throw a damn good one at that.

My grandfather was sick in hospital last year, when I called him for a chat. He was talking me about how he had been telling the nurses about his “beautiful wife”.

He’s not a drinker, he loves to sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee. Meanwhile, my nan will have a Moët in one hand whilst getting jiggy with it on the dance floor, making sure everyone is up having a good time.

He said that he was telling the nurses: “My wife is the life of the party. She is the funnest and most beautiful woman I know and there is no one like her.”

It was just about the most wonderful thing I’ve ever heard.

The girls who are confident and love fun, need to stop being put down for being “too out there”.

We are wild, fun, uninhibited, and so sure of ourselves that we are comfortable in any situation.

More importantly, why are some men so intimidated by confident, fun women, only to write them off as "too much"?

Loving to socialise doesn’t always translate to being a drunken mess – it simply means, we bloody love to make people happy and kindness is our currency.

And the truth is, the reason why we are so much fun and exude so much light, is because we are full of love.

Here's a lesson for all you blokes out there: don’t miss out on being loved by a ‘party girl’, there’s nothing else like it.
