A failed first look and torn wedding dress: Everything that went wrong on my wedding day

In the leadup to my wedding, I was terrified something would go wrong on the big day.

Everyone told me not to worry. Then my wedding day rolled around and multiple things went wrong, from a failed first look to a torn wedding dress.

But to my complete surprise, it didn't ruin my wedding; if anything, it made the day even better.

The first snag hit when my now-husband and I tried to do a 'first look' before the ceremony.

I was supposed to meet him in a little courtyard behind our venue at 1.50pm, then we'd have the bridesmaids and groomsmen join us for a few photos.

But I was running late and in my rush to get out the door, I didn't check my phone.

It meant I missed his text saying he was also running late and to wait an extra five minutes before leaving my room.

So right as I was racing across the courtyard where they were setting up our ceremony, dress hiked up to my knees with my bridesmaids in hot pursuit, my husband was stepping out onto a balcony overlooking the venue on his way down to meet me.

I looked up, he looked down, and that was it – our 'first look' happened by accident.

Some brides would have been devastated to miss out on the special moment we had carefully planned for, understandably so.

But the moment it was so 'us' (me speed-walking somewhere, obsessed with being on time; him just going with the flow) that all we could do is burst into laughter.

So yes, our first look went wrong – and it was perfect.

It also helped ease our nerves before our amazing photographer Bob from Waymark Productions arrived to snap some pre-ceremony shots, which turned out great because we were already past the big moment of seeing each other for the first time.

It was on my way back to the hotel room after those photos that I learned something else had gone wrong.

The wedding décor company had delivered and set up the wrong arbour for our ceremony, which was less than an hour away by that point.

Fortunately, my husband and bridesmaids didn't tell me until after our wedding coordinator had confirmed a van was speeding down the highway with the right one to swap in before the ceremony started.

And the mix-ups didn't stop there.

While feeding my husband his lines for the legally binding part of the wedding ceremony, our amazing celebrant Elle accidentally referred to me as his "lawfully wedded husband".

Again, we couldn't help but burst into laughter, Elle included.

My husband had been terrified that he'd muck up his lines during the ceremony, so her mistake actually made him feel more at ease (he made sure to say "wife" instead).

It also got a laugh from all our friends and family, which is exactly what you want on your wedding day.

The last thing that went wrong on the night had to do with my dress, which absolutely no bride wants to hear.

During the reception, I bustled my long train by attaching it to one of the buttons down the back.

My husband then proceeded to step on it again and again and again, ripping off no less than six buttons in the process.

Again, some brides would have been understandably horrified.

But I had no clue it was even happening because my wonderful, amazing bridesmaid didn't say a word about the damage and just kept bustling my dress to the next available button.

When I spotted the missing buttons the next morning and realised what had happened, I just had to laugh.

Because my wedding day was one of the happiest of my life and every single thing that went 'wrong' only made it better.

They also became the stories I'll tell for years to come.
