UK TV presenter slams Donald Trump's COVID comments as her husband battles coronavirus

UK TV presenter Kate Garraway has called Donald Trump's comments on COVID-19 "heartbreaking" as her husband remains in hospital battling the disease.

The Good Morning Britain co-host slammed the US President's comments advising Americans not to let coronavirus "take over" or "dominate" their lives.

"It is extraordinary," Garraway said in disbelief during Tuesday morning's show.

"It's heartbreaking actually. So his attitude, you could argue, sanctioned the behaviour.

"And really what would we be doing if this was you or me? We would be sobbing our hearts out saying 'aren't I lucky I'm doing so well'," she added.

The 53-year-old's husband, Derek Draper, was admitted to hospital in March and has been in and out of a coma in the months since.

On returning to her breakfast TV role, Garraway told viewers her husband nearly died six times while battling the virus.

Last week Draper, 53, became the UK's longest-surviving coronavirus sufferer still receiving treatment in hospital.

As a result, the couple's two kids — daughter Darcey, 14, and son William, 11 — haven't seen their dad in seven months, the TV presenter revealed recently.

Talking about the footage of Trump leaving the Walter Reed Medical Centre, Garraway asked her co-hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid: "Do you think at some level he knows that and thinks 'I've just gotta carry on like this'?"

"And there are children who have died, with their mums and dads not being allowed to see them, so why does he think it's more important for him to get into that car?"

Morgan, a friend of Trump's after having previously been on reality TV show Celebrity Apprentice, didn't defend the US President.

"I'll tell you why they're scared of it Mr President — because of your lax refusal to take it seriously from day one, your 'we don't have a problem with corona', 'we're in control', 'we're on top of it'.

"Your refusal to take decisive action, rather like our own Prime Minister here, has led to an absolute catastrophe in your country."

Trump, 74, told Americans in a tweet before being discharged from hospital, they shouldn't "be afraid of Covid. Don't let it dominate your life", adding that he feels "better than I did 20 years ago!"

His actions have been slammed by experts around the world.
