Trump trolled after declaring 'tremendous respect' for women

US President Donald Trump has declared his "tremendous respect" for women on International Women's Day — and the world is not having a bar of it.

Early yesterday morning, Trump tweeted: "I have tremendous respect for women and the many roles they serve that are vital to the fabric of our society and our economy."

Then in a follow-up tweet, he wrote: "On International Women's Day, join me in honoring the critical role of women here in America & around the world."

But the president received an immediate backlash on Twitter as thousands rushed to point out his turbulent history with women, which is littered with accusations of sexual misconduct. Something he has previously dismissed as "locker-room banter".

Some of the incidents even threatened to derail his election campaign last year, including a leaked recording showing Trump bragging about grabbing women "by the pussy".

Following his tweets, people called out the president's "sexist" and "chauvanist" behaviour, throwing his own quotes back at him and linking to previous news articles.

Some questioned his treatment of female politicians, including former Presidential nominee Democrat Hilary Clinton.

While others pointed to the existing gender inequality in the US, including that women currently earn almost 19 percent less than men.
