Girl's hand amputated after freak backyard accident

A UK girl has had her hand amputated following a freak accident on a trampoline.

Vienna Hayers, 12, from Bedford was performing a flip on the family's trampoline on 10 June when she landed heavily on her right arm, breaking her elbow. The break was so severe it stopped the blood flow to her right hand.

Clair Bradley, a friend who has sent up a crowdfunding page for the Hayers family, explained Vienna was initially in Bedford hospital and underwent numerous surgeries over the course of several weeks in an attempt to get blood supply to her hand, but they were unsuccessful.

Vienna was transferred to Great Ormond Street for one final attempt, but staff were unable to save her hand and it has since been amputated.

Her father Gary has told The Sun his daughter is a "very, very active child, very sporty, loves her dancing" and described the incident as "just a freak accident".

"It was an horrendous moment in time, but you've got to get on with it. They reckon it will take a two-year cycle to come to terms with it," he added.

To make matters worse, visits to Vienna's bedside have been restricted due to the coronavirus crisis. Gary has only been able to see his daughter in person once since the accident, relying on Facetime calls to stay in touch.

He recalled one phone call with Vienna ahead of one of her surgeries, during which she was "immensely brave", reassuring her father and asking him not to cry.

Gary added the photo used on the crowdfunding page and shown here was taken just before her hand was amputated.

"I don't know if I would have been smiling like that," he said.

Vienna's family said she had been a "superstar" and they were keen to get her home to help her recover and adapt to her new life.

Many people think of trampolines as one of the safest pieces of equipment for children to play on, especially with recent inclusions such as  safety nets and spring-free designs.

The reality is, they are the culprit for thousands of product-related injuries in children around the world each year.

Trampolines are responsible for over 3,000 injuries each year in Australia — that's an average of eight people a day injured on a trampoline — making them responsible for some of the most reported product-related injuries to children in the country.

The most common injuries are bone fractures, superficial contusions and head injuries.
