TikTok divided over disturbing footage of rat in New York toilet

TikTok users have been equally fascinated and disgusted by viral footage of a rat swimming in a toilet bowl in New York.

Posted to the popular account WhatIsNewYork, the gruesome clip shows a rat splashing around in the water of a toilet bowl to the horrified reaction of those filming.

"Came right up the toilet," the video was captioned on TikTok.

The video quickly attracted over two million views in just a few days and thousands of comments.

Commenters were divided over the best way to approach the toilet rat, with some suggesting the TikTokker should flush it, while others called for a less cruel way to deal with it.

"Simply FLUSH IT," one shocked person commented.

"The poor baby is struggling, please tell me you helped him," another said.

One added: "Please just help him it's not funny."

The official TikTok account for New York's Empire State Building even added its two cents, simply writing: "Nope".

The original poster of the video did not divulge how they dealt with the surprising toilet visitor.

This isn't the first time a New Yorker has shared a viral video of a rat in an unexpected place, after footage of rats dragging slices of pizza down subway steps horrified people around the world.
