All the things you can get for free on your birthday

Everyone loves a freebie and there are numerous things on offer — for no cost at all — when it's your birthday.

All you have to do is ask.

"There are so many things you can take advantage of, just for being born," finance commentator Effie Zahos says.

Zahos joined Today to run through the retailers and brands offering freebies to customers who join their loyalty programs and include their birthday when filling out the form.

Food

Zahos says in some cases, "You can actually have a whole meal all by just signing up to their membership and putting your birthday down.”

Sumo Salad offers a free salad, Subway hands out a free cookie and drink when you buy a six-inch sub, at KrispyKreme you can score a four-pack of original glazed donuts and Boost offers a free drink.

Baskin-Robbins offers a free scoop of ice cream and a discount on a birthday cake, while Chatime offers a free drink within your birthday month. Cold Rock also offers a free ice cream, as does Gelato Messina and Gelatissimo.

Crust offers a free pizza, Gloria Jeans offers a free drink, Hungry Jacks offers a free Whopper burger, Mad Mex offers a burrito or naked burrito, Muffin Break offers a free muffin, and Salsas a free burrito or bowl.

Clothing

At Best&Less, shoppers (and their families) can get 15 per cent off their purchase, Levis offers a $20 voucher, Myer offers a $30 voucher with Myer One Platinum membership. David Jones, meanwhile, offers a $10 eGift card, and Country Road also offers a $20 voucher.

Adidas offers 15 per cent off full-priced items only, as does Forever New, and ASOS offers a 10 per cent promo code to be used throughout your birthday month.

H&M offers 25 per cent off your item of choice, and JAG offers a $20 birthday voucher with no minimum spend. At Jeanswest, a $10 voucher is provided on a $20 minimum spend on full-price items only.

Mimco offers vouchers depending on the membership level, starting at $15. Pandora offers 15 per cent off regular-priced jewellery, and Witchery's voucher offerings depend on membership level.

Beauty

At Priceline, customers can get special birthday discounts based off of how much sisters spend, while Mecca and Sephora offer small gift packages.

"Think of any outlet out there and ask them if they've got a club and you're pretty much guaranteed some discounts," Zahos says.

Qantas, Dymocks and Sheridan are among some of the other retailers offering birthday specials.

But like any good deal, consumers should watch out for any potential fine print.

"It's quite clever because you think, 'Yay, I've got $20 to spend at Myer' but what are you going to buy for $20?" Zahos says.

"You're going to have to dip in a little bit more. So, take care with the ones that are vouchers.

"I suggest setting up a separate email too, because you will be bogged down with a lot of junk mail so maybe just have one for your birthday emails."
