Sydney nurse reveals how a tiny detail on woman's iPhone may have saved her life

A Sydney nurse has revealed how a tiny detail on a woman's iPhone helped save her life.

Australian health worker and TikToker Lauren recalled how she was waiting in line at a Boost Juice earlier this week when a woman suddenly collapsed and hit her head. 

Lauren kicked into "nurse mode" and went to offer help, before starting CPR on the afflicted fellow shopper.

"I immediately went over to see if they needed any help," she explained in the video.

"No-one was there with a healthcare background. Obviously, Having a duty of care and being comfortable doing basic life support, I was like alright I need to put my big girl pants on and I need to step in."

Lauren said the woman was "not in a good way" so she directed a bystander to call 000.

She had no idea what caused her to collapse but surmised it might be a cardiac issue, before asking for a defibrillator.

In a stroke of genius, the nurse also realised she could check the woman's iPhone for an important detail.

"All of a sudden I had an idea, she had an iPhone so I'm going to check her Medical ID," Lauren continued.

"So I held the lock button and the volume button together, and then swiped for her Medical ID."

A Medical ID on an iPhone helps first responders access critical medical information from your phone's lock screen without needing a passcode. 

It also helps health workers know who to contact in the event of a medical emergency. Samsung users can also add their medical information in their settings.

The shopper didn't have it properly updated with medical information, however it did display her full name and date of birth.

"Literally just because I had her name meant I was able to communicate better with her, and she was able to communicate by squeezing my hand a little bit better knowing I was talking to her," Lauren said.

"However, it would have been really helpful if she did have it up to date and I urge everyone to go and update theirs, because it did turn out that she did in fact have a cardiac condition, which made her pass out in the first place."

Lauren also said it was important people add an emergency contact to their Medical ID.

Her video, which has since attracted over 400,000 views, also invited a deluge of supportive comments from followers.

Many agreed it could be a life-saving choice to properly update your medical information on your iPhone.

"I've got mine updated. It also includes a note that I have a young child and to ensure her safety/ whereabouts as she is usually with me," one woman wrote.

"My boss used emergency contacts on my phone to call my parents when I had a seizure, thank you for reminding me to update it," another said.
