Why do women find it so hard to talk about money?

Most women just don’t like talking about money.

What they earn. What they owe. It’s considered a bit icky.

So in an effort to combat this, a few years ago, two girlfriends and I decided we would share how much we all earned. It was so confronting!

We had to count to three and say our income at the same time. But after we got over the initial awkwardness it was amazing and now we talk to each other openly about promotions and what we’re worth.

But it really showed to me how hard it is for women to talk about money.

Which seems crazy considering many women are running their family households and making most day-to-day purchases and budgeting decisions, they still feel uncomfortable discussing financial matters — even with their financial advisers.

Ironically, 90% of women will be solely responsible for their finances at some point in their lives — whether from staying single, experiencing divorce or simply living longer than men.

It seems that talking about money is still seen as taboo.

Some people say part of the reason for the pay gap is because men are more comfortable talking about money and asking for a pay increase that’s part of why they get more?
