Best in show: Countess of Wessex, Sophie, steals the spotlight at Burghley Horse Trials

Sophie Wessex’s love of horses could be why she’s rumoured to be the Queen’s favourite daughter-in-law.

So, it was no surprise to see the Royal on Saturday, at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials in Stamford, England.

The Countess of Wessex, who is married to Prince Edward (Queen Elizabeth’s youngest son), looked ready to ride herself, as she enjoyed the fourth and final day of the annual event.

Sophie was spotted getting out of her Land Rover - a royal favourite - wearing khaki tights with brown knee-high boots and a navy double-breasted coat.

The 52-year-old kept her blonde hair back off her face in a ponytail.

Attending the event with her eldest daughter Lady Louise Windsor by her side, the mother-and-daughter duo appeared to have a laugh as they inspected the donkeys as part of a parade in the program.

The 13-year-old Royal appeared to enjoy the day out as much as her mum and was even dressed in a similar outfit - wearing blue jeans, paired with a grey blazer and printed white shirt.

However, the teen did take some time away from mum, spending a little while walking around the grounds with her friends.

Sophie used the solo time for a spot of shopping at the pop-up stalls on site.

The Countess of Wessex and Lady Louise weren’t the only royals at the horse trials, with Zara Tindall taking part in one of the equestrian events.

Sophie was the first commoner to marry into the royal family following Princess Diana’s death, something that reportedly made her uncomfortable.

But now, long after her days working in public relations, the Countess is one of the hardest working royals.

The mother-of-two is a patron or president to more than 70 charities and undertook over 170 official engagements in 2016, down slightly on the 220 in 2015.

In her spare time, Sophie enjoys horse riding and is regularly seen on weekends riding with the Queen.

While Her Majesty isn’t meant to play favourites, it’s understood their common love of horses, along with Sophie’s hard working nature and limited scandals, has made her the Queen’s most beloved royal family member.

“She is trusted and relied on by the Queen in a way I couldn't say applied to the Duchess of Cambridge or the Duchess of Cornwall,” a royal aide told Daily Mail.

“She is like another daughter to Her Majesty, they are that close.”

While another sign of just how close the pair are, is that Sophie accompanies the Queen in her car on Christmas Day to the family’s church service in Sandringham.

And in 2010, Sophie was awarded the Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, the Queen’s highest seal of approval.
