Senator John Warner, Elizabeth Taylor's sixth husband, has passed away at 94
Elizabeth Taylor's sixth husband, former US senator John Warner — who she met on a blind date at a dinner held for Queen Elizabeth — has passed away at 94.
Warner, who was a Navy secretary and the sixth of the actress' seven husbands, died of heart failure on Tuesday at his home in Virginia.

According to his long-time chief of staff, Susan A. Magill, Warner's wife Jeanne Vander Myde and his daughter were at his side at the time of his passing.

Prior to his marriages with Taylor and Magill, Warner was married to Catherine Conover Mellon for 16 years.
Mellon is the banking heiress daughter of multimillionaire Paul Mellon, and her 1957 marriage with Warner resulted in three children: Virginia, John W. Warner IV and Mary.

Warner and Mellon divorced in 1973, and Warner received a US$7 million (approx. $9 million) settlement.
The Republican senator would then go on to marry his Hollywood sweetheart in 1978.

Warner and the Cleopatra actress met in 1976 on a blind date, after Taylor had finalised her second divorce from Richard Burton.
The British ambassador at the time had asked Warner to escort Taylor to a party at the embassy honouring the Queen, who was also present and visiting Washington at the time.

He was elected to the Senate two years later in 1978 after Taylor — a former Democrat — campaigned for her Republican husband.
Taylor told Harper's Bazaar in 2006 she was told not to dress too conspicuously during the campaign.

"I ended up in a tweed suit," she said.
"Me. Little tweed suits. What I won't do for love."

The pair divorced in 1982 after six years of marriage.
Taylor said loneliness was a large factor in the divorce as Warner was dedicated to his job in the Senate.

'"I don't think I've ever been so alone in my life as when I was Mrs. Senator, and I don't blame my ex-husband," she wrote in her book Elizabeth Takes Off (1987).

"He never pretended to be anything but a man devoted to public service, and once that service began in earnest, I had to take a backseat to his constituency."
Warner remained close friends with Taylor until her passing in 2011.

After their divorce, Warner briefly dated journalist Barbara Walters before marrying Myde, a real estate agent, in 2003.

Warner retired from the Senate chamber in 2009.
During his five terms, he was a key supporter of President George W. Bush's war in Iraq.
He was succeeded by Democrat Mark Warner (the two are not related) in 2008.
