Neil Diamond left Princess Diana 'blushing' when they danced at the White House

John Travolta spoke recently about the 'magical moment' he danced with Princess Diana at a White House dinner in 1985.

But he wasn't the only big name who snagged a dance with the late Princess of Wales – someone else left Diana "blushing" as they took to the dancefloor.

That "someone" was none other than American singer-songwriter Neil Diamond, best known for his hit 'Sweet Caroline'.

"The one rock-solid remembrance I have is that Diana was visibly blushing when she danced with Neil," former White House photographer Pete Souza wrote on Instagram on Friday.

He shared a stunning photo of the Princess of Wales taking a spin around the dancefloor with Diamond as then-First Lady Nancy Reagan watched on.

Diana was in Washington D.C for a State Dinner with Prince Charles, hosted by US President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy.

"In the photograph, you can see that her cheeks are a bit red but in the moment, it was even more obvious," Souza wrote.

Diana does indeed look flushed in the photo, Diamond holding her with a microphone still in his hand as they danced.

Souza shed some light on that detail too, writing: "Accompanied by the military band, Neil sang a few of his songs. I distinctly remember him singing, 'You Don't Bring Me Flowers'.

"My recollection–and I can't be sure this is correct–is that he continued singing this song as he danced with her."

Royal fans adored the photo, many writing how happy Diana looked in the snap from 1985, and how beautiful she was in her floor-length black gown.

Though the snap of Diana and Diamond is certainly stunning, the most iconic photo from that night at the White House has to be the one of John Travolta whirling the princess around the dancefloor.

The dance, which took place on November 9, was planned but Travolta was unsure about how to actually approach the princess when his moment came.

"I didn't expect to be asked to dance with her," he explained to Esquire Mexico.

"I go up to her, touch her on the shoulder, ask her to dance. She turns around and when she sees me she displays that captivating smile, somewhat sad, and accepts my invitation. 

"And there we were, dancing together like in a fairy tale. Who could imagine that something like this is going to happen to you one day?"

The Grease star called the moment "special" and "magical", and the photo from that night certainly looks like something out of a modern fairytale.

Diana had a few more high-profile dances that night, also dancing with Clint Eastwood and Tom Selleck.

August will mark 24 years since her tragic death in Paris in 1997.
