Swedish swimmer and three-time Olympic champ Sarah Sjöström has detailed the "traumatic" arrival of her son Adrian.

The 32-year-old welcomed her first child with her husband, Swedish fencer Johan de Jong Skierus, 36, on Tuesday with the newborn arriving in the hospital driveway.

The new mum shared a couple of photos of the new parents holding their bundle of joy while also detailing why she thought she might not survive the birth in a lengthy caption.

Sjöström revealed she'd had managing contractions at home for about 24 hours before going to the hospital for a check up five hours before Adrian's arrival.

While she thought she might be close to giving birth, the swimmer was only 2cm dilated, which meant she still had 8cm to go and was therefore sent home for a little longer.

But that's when things turned for the Olympian.

"A while after we came back home, everything changed quickly within moments, the contractions pain became overwhelming," the 32-year-old explained.

"I started bleeding and we immediately called the delivery ward at the hospital we were supposed to go to, the midwife probably recognised from my breathing through the phone that I was already in the pushing stage, and thankfully she insisted on sending us an ambulance that will take us to the next available hospital. The one we were supposed to go to was full.

"The ride to the hospital, felt endless. Even though it was with full throttle and blue lights on.

"The pain was indescribable, way to late for any pain relief like I had planned to go for. I truly believed, that I wouldn't survive."

Sjöström says as the ambulance doors were thrown open in the hospital driveway her son was already on his way out.

"He was born right there in the chaos outside the hospital entrance in the ambulance," she told followers.

The first-time mum said the moment she heard her son's cry "changed everything".

"From unimaginable pain and fear to the most magical moment of our lives," she wrote. "It was traumatic and magical all at once."
