Same-sex couple marry at the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge

A same-sex couple have made history this morning by getting married at the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Georgie Gardner and Ben Fordham crossed live to the Aussie icon from the TODAY Show studio moments after Warren and Paul said 'I do'.

The record-breaking nuptials were made all the more poignant because Warren was motivated to lose almost half his original body weight to climb the bridge.

"I used to stand under the bridge and think, one of these days I'll climb it, and the eleventh time was to get married!"

The newlyweds were overcome with happiness and Paul said the wedding was "absolutely wonderful".

For the couple, the momentous occasion of making history hadn't quite sunk in yet as they celebrated atop the iconic bridge with close friends and family.

Warren may have been right at home on the bridge but how did Paul feel about the choice of location?

"I was a bit afraid of heights, but the views are so beautiful and it's so relaxing," Paul said. 

"The venue is unique like we are," Paul said. "It's the best place to do it."

BridgeClimb Sydney say there have been more than 4000 proposals at the top of the Bridge.

Since 2008, they've also offered weddings to climbers at the summit, with the first ever BridgeClimb wedding taking place June 3, 2008.

Warren also said he was looking forward to watching and celebrating this year's Mardi Gras in light of marriage equality.

"It's about people being able to be themselves for the first time in a very long time and we celebrate the people who put in all the hard work...we feel very humbled," Warren said.
