King Charles and Queen Camilla to reunite with US President Donald Trump as state visit to US confirmed

King Charles and Queen Camilla's US state visit has been confirmed today by Buckingham Palace.

The recent war in Iran, launched by Israel and the US, had prompted question marks about whether the royal tour would go ahead, especially given Trump's repeated criticism of the UK and other allies, including direct attacks on Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

However, Their Majesties have formally accepted the invitation and will head to Washington, DC, at the end of April, with the full program to be announced later.

"On advice of His Majesty's government, and at the invitation of the President of the United States, the King and Queen will undertake a state visit to the United States of America," the palace said in a statement.

"Their Majesties' program will celebrate the historic connections and the modern bilateral relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence."

The visit will include a formal state dinner at the White House, as well as a historic address by the monarch to both houses of Congress on Capitol Hill, according to UK media outlets.

"He's going to be here very soon... we're going to have a state dinner," Trump said last week ahead of the announcement. "It's going to be great."

While Charles visited the US 19 times as Prince of Wales, this tour will mark his first visit as monarch.

It's also his first official visit since 2018, where he represented his late mother Queen Elizabeth II at the funeral of George HW Bush.

Following their time in the US, the King will then continue solo to Bermuda to undertake his first royal visit as monarch to a British overseas territory.

His Majesty last visited there as Prince of Wales in 1970 and it will mark the first visit by a reigning king to the island.

Queen Elizabeth last visited the island territory in the North Atlantic Ocean as sovereign in November 2009.

Trump made history with his last UK state visit in September 2025, becoming the only US president to receive two state visit invitations.

The leader, who grew up with a Scottish mother who was a big admirer of Queen Elizabeth, was vocal at the time about how chuffed he was to receive the honour.

As a result, Trump has often complimented the royals publicly and spoken about the special relationship the British royal family has with the US.

After Trump's controversial comments about British troops in Afghanistan in January, it's said the King's concerns were relayed to the White House, prompting Trump to walk back his allegations that British troops stayed away from the frontline during the conflict.

Prince Harry, who served two tours of Afghanistan in the British Army, also came out swinging following Trump's claims.

In response to the US president's comments, the Duke of Sussex - who now lives in the US - said "sacrifices" made by NATO forces during the conflict "deserve to be spoken about truthfully and with respect".

"I served there. I made lifelong friends there. And I lost friends there. The United Kingdom alone had 457 service personnel killed," he said.
