The incredible historic homes used to recreate the royal family's palaces and castles in The Crown

The British royals famously have no involvement with The Crown, so it's no surprise to hear their various properties weren't made available for filming purposes.

Instead, the crew behind Netflix's hit series have had to improvise, using various estates around the UK to recreate the monarchy's historic palaces and castles.

In Season 4, the action takes place in Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, Sandringham House, Balmoral Castle, Windsor Castle and Clarence House.

We also see Prince Charles and Princess Anne's Gloucestershire properties, Highgrove House and Gatcombe Park, as well as the Spencer family estate, Althorp House.

Here are some of the historic properties that helped create the backdrop for this season's dramas.

Burghley House

This 16th-century Tudor mansion serves as The Crown's Windsor Castle — the residence where Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip have isolated during COVID-19.

Located near Stamford, the magnificent property is no stranger to the screen, having appeared in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, The Da Vinci Code and Pride and Prejudice.

In previous seasons of The Crown, Belvoir Castle in Lincolnshire was the stand-in for Windsor Castle.

Ardverikie House

The Crown's cast may change every two seasons, but this Scottish baronial house has been a constant throughout the show's run.

Ardverikie House plays the role of Balmoral Castle, the sprawling Highlands estate where the royals spend their summer holidays every year.

The property features prominently this season, with Margaret Thatcher and Princess Diana both subjected to the royals' famous 'Balmoral test' in an early episode.

The 19th-century residence may be familiar to fans of historical time-travel series Outlander.

Wilton House

This stunning centuries-old manor has landed a plum role in The Crown, providing some of the interior shots for Buckingham Palace.

The palace's exterior is portrayed by London's Old Royal Naval College and Moor Park Mansion.

Built on the site of a 9th-century nunnery in Wiltshire, Wilton House and its 21-acre grounds is now home to the Earl and Countess of Pembroke.

The stately home has appeared in period films including Emma and Pride and Prejudice.

Somerley House

Prince Charles' beloved country home Highgrove House is portrayed for the first time by Somerley House, a Grade II listed Stately Home in Hampshire.

The beautiful property was designed in the 18th century and is not open to the public, though it is available as a wedding venue.

Wrotham Park

This Hertfordshire country home is the stand-in for Gloucester Park, where Princess Anne and her family live in Gloucestershire.

It was originally part of an estate dating back to the 1300s.

Somerleyton Hall

Each Christmas, the royals make a pilgrimage to Sandringham House, where they typically spend the festive season together.

In The Crown, the famous Norfolk estate is represented by Somerleyton Hall in East Anglia.

It mightn't be a British royal family property, but the Jacobean manor is incredible in its own right.

Somerleyton Hall's 12-acre grounds boast a walled garden, manicured gardens and a maze, and there's a ballroom to be found inside.
