The Crown producers in talks for prequel which will focus on era before the Windsors

Royal drama The Crown is reportedly in early conversations to begin work on a prequel.

The hit Netflix show is down to it's final two seasons, which will cover the divorce of Prince Charles and Princess Diana right through to the Queen's reaction to Diana's death.

The series will stop short of covering Prince William and Kate Middleton's university romance or Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's whirlwind courtship.

The prequel, which is in discussions but not yet greenlit or in development according to Deadline Hollywood, is set to cover the era before the Windsors.

"Buckingham Palace will be relieved to hear that this series would likely predate the Windsor era..." royal commentator Omid Scobie tweeted.

While that thought might be met with a sigh of relief from the royal family, a young Princess Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret are still set to feature in a later series covering their beloved father's reign, which may upset the monarch.

It will also likely cover King Edward VIII's abdication over his romance with American divorcee Wallis Simpson, which is still a sore spot for the monarchy.

The prequel would start with the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, and would run up to where The Crown began - Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's wedding in 1947.

The Crown creator Peter Morgan would also pen the prequel, which would run for three to five seasons, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

Upcoming seasons of the show will cover the reigns of four kings across 50 years: Edward VII (1901-10), George V (1910-36), Edward VIII (1936), and George VI (1936-52).

Four seasons of the show have streamed so far, winning 11 Primetime Emmys last year, including Outstanding Drama Series, two Emmys in 2020, five in 2018, and three in 2017.

Season 5 is set to stream in November, with a new cast taking over to portray the royal family through the 1990s, including: Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Dominic West as Prince Charles, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, and Olivia Williams as Camilla Parker Bowles. Jonny Lee Miller will also appear as Prime Minister John Major.

After COVID-19 delays, Season 6, the final season, is set to begin filming in August.
