Sweden's royal family has come together for the most glamorous night of the year, attending the Nobel Prize gala in Stockholm.

The annual event sees the King and Queen, and senior members of the royal family, mingle with the winners of the prestigious awards during a glittering ceremony at the Concert Hall followed by a banquet.

King Carl XVI Gustaf, who recently lost his sister Princess Birgitta, and Queen Silvia led the celebrations.

They were joined by Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia – who is pregnant with their fourth child – and Princess Madeleine and Christopher O'Neill.

It is the first time Princess Madeleine has attended the gala since 2019 after her family returned to Sweden following years of living in Miami.

The Nobel Peace Prize, which is separate, was held in Norway and attended by King Harald and Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

Princess Madeleine wore a green ruffled gown by Fadi El Khoury and the Connaught Diamond tiara, one of the most frequently worn pieces in the collection of the Swedish royal family.

It features garlands made up of diamonds in the shape of forget-me-not flowers. A diamond pendant is suspended from each wreath adding to the grandeur of the tiara.

The piece was made in 1904 and presented as a wedding gift to Princess Margaret of Connaught by her parents, the Duke and Duchess of Connaught. Princess Margaret became Crown Princess of Sweden when she married the future King Gustaf VI Adolf.

Queen Mary of Denmark regularly wears another of Princess Margaret of Connaught's former jewels: the sapphire brooch. It was given to Mary by Queen Margrethe II when Crown Prince Christian was born in 2005.

Princess Sofia, who is due to have her fourth child in February, wore a blue gown by Danish designer Søren Le Schmidt – the same frock seen during a recent photoshoot with Vogue Scandinavia, in celebration of her 40th birthday on December 6.

Sofia wore her Palmette tiara, topped with London blue topazes. The tiara was a gift from her in-laws when she married Prince Carl Philip in 2015.

The tiara's gemstones can be swapped and Sofia has regularly changed them over the years using diamonds, emeralds, citrine, turquoise and pearls depending on her gown.

Søren Le Schmidt – who famously designed Queen Mary's white frock worn on proclamation day in January – said it was "truly humbling and rewarding" to see Sofia re-wearing the blue gown.

"As a designer, moments like these remind me about why I'm passionate about creating timeless, elegant pieces," he told Vogue Scandinavia.

"Seeing Princess Sofia in the gown, radiating grace and confidence, was truly humbling and rewarding.

"Princess Sofia has a strong sense of style, so it was important that the gown reflected both her personal taste and the formality of the event.

"We discussed everything from fabric choice to silhouette to ensure it felt uniquely hers while remaining timeless and refined."

The dress had to accommodate Princess Sofia's growing tummy.

"The subtle use of textured fabric and hand-finished elements add depth and richness to the otherwise minimalist design," he said.

"The placement of seams and the precision of the tailoring were carefully considered to enhance the gown's architectural elegance while allowing freedom of movement – a balance that defines my approach to design."
