Malaysia's Princess Sofie Louise and Crown Prince Tengku Muhammad Faiz Petra welcome baby boy

A Swedish-born Malaysian princess has given birth to a baby boy.

The new arrival was born on July 17 at the University Science Malaysia Hospital in the state of Kelantan, north of Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur.

The baby is the first child for Kelantan's Crown Prince Tengku Muhammad Faiz Petra and his wife Crown Princess Sofie Louise Johansson.

"Her Highness and the royal baby are both in good health," the Kelantan Sultan Office said in a statement on social media.

"HRH the Crown Prince and HH the Crown Princess would like to thank all the employees at [the hospital] who were involved and to all the Kelantanese who prayed for their well-being and the safe delivery of their child."

Princess Sofie shared a photo of the baby days later, revealing his name.

"Welcome to the world baby Johan," the 36-year-old wrote.

Crown Prince Tengku Muhammad, 49, met his future wife while he was studying overseas.

He studied history at the London School of Economics and Political Science and University College London.

Johansson was working in England as an au pair at the time.

They married in 2019 in a lavish ceremony attended by more than 300 people, including other members of Malaysia's royal family.

Princess Sofie regularly shares details of her life now she's part of the monarchy.

Recently, she posted photos of her and her husband taking part in an infant CPR course in preparation for their baby.

The royal also tried to integrate part of her new Malaysian culture with her former homeland's including incorporating traditional Batik print into Sweden's national dress.

In January 2019, Sofie's husband's brother, Muhammad V, abdicated the throne just months after reportedly marrying Russian beauty queen Oksana Voevodina.

The former Miss Moscow converted to Islam to marry the monarch. His decision to step down from the Malaysian throne shocked the nation. He was just two years into his five-year term as Sultan.

Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah of the state of Pahang was elected as Sultan, becoming Malaysia's 16th monarch since it gained independence from Britain in 1957.

In May, he and wife Queen Raja Permaisuri Agong attended the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla in London.

Malaysia has a constitutional monarchy, where the top job rotates between nine hereditary state rulers every five years.

While the position is largely ceremonial, the monarch is tasked with upholding Malay and Islamic tradition.
