We often associate royals with the kind of elaborate jewellery many of us only dream of wearing: glittering tiaras and necklaces, bracelets and earrings dripping in precious gems, handed down from one royal generation to the next.

However, when they're not at balls and banquets, the royals tend to keep their jewellery a little more low-key – and often very personal.

From the Duchess of Sussex to Princess Diana, scroll on to see all the times royal women have been seen keeping their loved ones close to their chests (and wrists...) in the form of personalised 'tribute' jewellery.

Queen Mary of Denmark

If you take a close look at the keyhole in Queen Mary's dress here, you'll see a tiny diamond-encrusted 'F' sitting right at the top.

The Danish queen wore the dainty pendant necklace, a nod to husband King Frederik X, as she arrived at her summer residence on July 9.

The 18K gold piece is from Halberstadt, a Danish fine jewellery brand.

However, she teams it with a second necklace, also carrying a special tribute...

The pendant on her second necklace, bearing the letter M for Mary, hangs lower than the F – you can see it here, poking out at the bottom of the keyhole.

This is a stunning 18k gold piece from Dulong Fine Jewellery with a sparkling brilliant diamond embedded in it.

The Princess of Wales also loves wearing jewellery tributes to her loved ones – especially her children.

Visiting Scotland in 2021, Kate kept her children close to her chest, wearing this necklace with the initial pendants G, C and L – for Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

The Duchess of Sussex might even be a bigger fan of personalised jewellery than her sister-in-law.

Meghan has worn numerous nods to husband Prince Harry and their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet over the years, either with their initials or their zodiac signs.

During a 2021 visit to New York, Meghan wore a yellow gold bracelet by brand Jennifer Meyer, which had Archie and Lili's names engraved on it.

The piece was on display as Meghan and Prince Harry addressed the crowd at Global Citizen Live.

In a video shared for her 40th birthday also in 2021, Meghan wore two delicate gold chains, designed by Logan Hollowell, featuring the constellations for Taurus and Gemini – Archie and Lili's star signs.

During a whirlwind solo visit to the US in 2019, Meghan kept Harry and Archie close to her chest.

As she cheered on her friend Serena Williams during the US Open Women's Singles, she wore a jewellery tribute to her husband and son – a 'dog tag' style necklace with two pendants, each bearing an initial, A and H, and a small stone.

The design was the 14k Gold Birthstone Accented Letter Dog-tag Pendant from Mini Mini Jewels.

Two months earlier in 2019, Meghan wore a tiny 'A' charm in a nod to Archie as she made an appearance at Wimbledon.

The 'Love Letter' pendant was created by Sydney-based jeweller Verse Fine Jewellery.
