The reason why Meghan Markle wasn't wearing a name tag at Royal Ascot

Meghan Markle's outfit at Royal Ascot has raised a few eyebrows.

Not for the stunning white belted Givenchy shirt dress the 36-year-old donned but for something missing - her lack of name tag.

Ascot is known for having a very strict dress code and even when the Duchess of Cambridge attended in 2017, she displayed her purple pin on her white lace dress.

However, it seems the absence of Meghan's badge has nothing to do with rank, rebellion or any kind of feminist statement.

The reason the Duchess of Sussex had her tag in her hand instead of being pinned to her dress was due to the delicate material, Harper's Bazaar reports.

Royal historian Marlene Koenig told the publication: "Wearing pins has nothing to do with protocol."

"Protocol is for official, diplomatic, state events, [including] where you sit, when you enter, etc."

"Perhaps [Meghan] did not want to ruin that nice Givenchy dress with a pin hole," she added.

It's believed Meghan's designer dress was made of silk or another light fabric which would have left a noticeable mark in her ensemble had she pined the badge as her husband Prince Harry did.

But it seems Meghan wasn't the only one sans badge, with both the Duchess of Cornwall and Princess Anne spotted without there name badges as well.

And while Sophie, Countess of Wessex wore hers on her chest, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie chose not to have theirs on either.
