As a royal family member, Kate Middleton has become a pro at conversing with strangers — but one Hollywood star reckons he managed to catch her off-guard.

Rami Malek crossed paths with the Duchess of Cambridge at the premiere of the new James Bond film last week, but the pair previously met at the 2019 BAFTA Awards.

Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday, Malek said he observed how the royals had "worked so hard" to familiarise themselves with the work of each of the actors before meeting them at the awards ceremony.

"You can see they've done their homework, and I just looked at Princess Kate at one point and said, 'This must be exhausting'," he recalled.

"She said, 'Why?' and I said, 'You just had a baby, right?' ... I think she was taken aback. She said, 'How are you doing?' and I said, 'No, how are you?'"

The duchess had welcomed her third child, Prince Louis, 10 months earlier in April 2018.

Though she didn't outright admit to how she was feeling, Malek says Kate's face said it all.

"In the most regal, elegant way she gave me a look, but you could tell. Imagine, dressed to the nines, you have to talk to all these actors," he continued.

When Kimmel pointed out royals have to be "super careful" about what they disclose in conversations with members of the public, Malek said that made his interaction with Kate even more significant.

"It was so cool, because I think I caught her off-guard for a second and [she] had that look of, in the most elegant, professional, royal way, 'Yes, it's a lot having a kid'," he said.

So, naturally, the Oscar winner offered to babysit for Kate and husband Prince William, as one does.

"I said, 'You know, if you ever need some time off, I'm backup for you'. She's like, 'What do you mean?' and I go, 'I can babysit. You guys go out, have a good time'," he laughed.

No word on whether the Cambridges took him up on the offer, but we can imagine Malek using his acting skills to keep Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis entertained.
