European Royals send special video message to Queen Margrethe: 'Happy birthday Aunt Daisy'

Queen Margrethe's 80th birthday party may have been cancelled thanks to coronavirus restrictions in Denmark.

But that hasn't stopped fellow European Royals from helping the monarch celebrate her big day.

Queen Maxima and King Willem-Alexander of The Netherlands as well as Queen Letizia and King Felipe of Spain were among those sending surprise video messages to "Aunt Daisy".

"Queen Maxima and I would have loved to have joined you for the celebration of your 80th birthday," King Willem Alexander said, adding: "Unfortunately, circumstances have dictated otherwise."

"Dear Aunt Daisy, Happy Birthday!" they added when returning later in the video, before raising a glass.

King Felipe told the Queen: "Hello Aunt Daisy, we're joining in this surprise, I understand, since we can't be there with all of you to celebrate your 80th."

Queen Letizia, a former newsreader before marrying into the Spanish Royal Family, looked right at home in front of the camera.

"I'm sure we will have the opportunity to share the celebration very soon," she chimed in.

"Please send all our love from us to you and all your family."

Others to feature in the four-minute video include Crown Princess Victoria with her family, as well as brother Prince Carl Philip of Sweden and King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and his wife Silvia.

King Harald V of Norway and his wife Sonja also said a few words as did Crown Prince Haakon and wife Princess Mette-Marit of Norway.

Also in the clip is King Philippe of Belgium and Henri, Grand Duke of Luxembourg and his wife Maria Teresa.

Queen Margrethe, who has been on the throne since 1972, officially cancelled her birthday celebrations on March 12 "in light of the spread of COVID-19 and the consequences for society".

There was set to be a carriage procession, reception at Copenhagen City Hall and a private dinner and dance at Fredensborg Castle for Her Majesty's big day.
