The York sisters join cousin Harry and the Queen for palace Garden Party

The Queen and the Duke of Sussex weren't the only royals to meet with invited guests at Buckingham Palace overnight.

Her Majesty's granddaughters, princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, were chosen to take part in the Garden Party in support of the Crown.

The York sisters mingled with the 8,000-strong crowd which included members of the Armed Services, ambassadors and those who have made a positive impact through the arts, charity work and volunteering.

Princess Eugenie, 29, shared her delight at being included in the festivities, writing on her official Instagram account: "I really enjoyed meeting such a diverse group of people who were all invited in recognition of their work in their respective communities".

It was the third Garden Party of the season and the first for Beatrice and Eugenie.

Eugenie wore an elegant cream dress by Sandro Paris while Beatrice chose a metallic floral print dress by The Vampire's Wife.

They were joined by other members of the British royal family, including Prince and Princess Michael of Kent whose daughter, Lady Gabriella Windsor, married at St George's Chapel in May 18. Also at the party were the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and the Duke of Kent.

Prince Harry was there alongside his grandmother but his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, remained at Frogmore Cottage on maternity leave with baby Archie.

Writing on Instagram, the Harry confirmed why Meghan was absent: "The Duke also greeted several representatives of The Duchess’ patronages on her behalf, as she is on maternity leave and was unable to attend".

It's the final Garden Party to be held at Buckingham Palace for the year. The last of the season will take place at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Scotland.

Garden Parties have been a royal tradition since the 1860s during Queen Victoria’s reign, and around 30,000 people will attend one this year.
