Queen Elizabeth has made her first official appearance since Prince Philip's funeral.

With the official royal mourning period now over, Her Majesty held two audiences at Buckingham Palace virtually from Windsor Castle on Tuesday.

The Queen received Ivita Burmistre via video link as the new ambassador for Latvia.

In a second audience, Her Majesty received Sara Affoué Amani, the new ambassador for Côte d'Ivoire.

In images released from the exchange, Her Majesty appeared smiling in a floral frock as she received the two women.

The Queen, who turned 95 last week, has been away from her London residence since last March as the first lockdowns came into effect in the UK.

The monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh relocated to Windsor, where they remained for most of the pandemic, with brief stints at Balmoral Castle in Scotland and Sandringham in Norfolk.

The Duke passed away at home on April 9, aged 99.

Despite being in the 14-day royal mourning period, the Queen kept duty and service front of mind, unofficially returning to work just four days after losing her husband of 73 years, hosting an event inside Windsor Castle to mark the retirement of the Royal Household's most senior official, Earl Peel, who was Lord Chamberlain for 14 years.

"This is the Queen making it clear that once the official period of mourning is over, she intends to resume her official duties, and I think we are increasingly going to see those she refers to as her substitutes assisting her, supporting her and making sure that she's not solo on future engagements," royal commentator Katie Nicholl told 9Honey at the time.

While it's not yet been confirmed, it's expected the monarch will attend the UK's State Opening of Parliament on May 11 in person, with Prince Charles by her side.
