Why The Queen's latest speech was a little unusual for the monarch

Queen Elizabeth has made plenty of speeches in her lifetime.

But her latest one, given during the Netherlands State Banquet at Buckingham Palace, has raised a few eyebrows as it seems to contain a first.

It appears to be the first time Her Majesty has spoken about Brexit, as she toasted to the Dutch Royal Family.

Addressing King Willem-Alexander, the 92-year-old said: "I recall the state visit of your grandmother Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard in 1972, when I spoke of how our nations' close understanding and relationship would become increasingly important as a new configuration of Europe was emerging.

"As we look toward a new partnership with Europe, it is our shared values and commitment to each other, that are out greatest asset, and demonstrate that even through change, our enduring alliance remains strong, and as innovators, traders and internationalists we look with confidence to the future."

While not an overly political speech, it still is a rarity for The Queen to touch on political issues such as Brexit.

King Willem-Alexander also addressed the highly-charged issue, saying he regretted the UK's decision to leave the EU, according to The Sun.

He also said during the Banquet: "At present, a lot of attention is focused on the 'technical' side of Brexit. That's understandable and necessary."

It's not the first time the King of the Netherlands has mentioned the topic however, telling UK Parliament in a speech they needed to "lift the shadow of uncertainty" over EU citizens.

However, it didn't set a serious tone to the event with Queen Elizabeth and King Willem all smiles as they clinked glasses in celebration of the two countries' connection over the years.

The glittering event saw the British and Dutch Royal Families dressed in white tie for the official function, which meant sashes, badges and tiaras for the women.

The Queen and Duchess of Cornwall both opted for white gowns, while Kate thrilled in an ice blue by Alexander McQueen.
