Victoria Arbiter on the Queen's life after Prince Philip: 'Rather than retiring, she remains devoted to her role'

It's been a year of upheaval for Queen Elizabeth II but the monarch has proven she is adept to change and has made the most of tumultuous times.

On April 9, her beloved husband Prince Philip died after years of health battles.

He was farewelled in a scaled-back funeral held at Windsor Castle, where the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh had spent months together isolating from the rest of the world, having been forced to retreat there due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The death of the duke marked the beginning of a new chapter for the monarch, who had been guided by her husband during the 73 years of their marriage.

While the world slowly came back to normal with the coming down of coronavirus pandemic restrictions, the Queen was able to recommence her face-to-face duties and meeting members of the public she adored.

But October would bring its own raft of challenges for the 95-year-old.

After enjoying her annual break at Balmoral Castle, the Queen returned to England and began a busy month of engagements. However, the heavy workload would soon take its toll and the Queen was ordered to rest by her doctors.

The rest order came after the Queen was seen using a walking stick, something she hadn't done for years.

Scheduled engagements were cancelled and members of the Queen's family were called in to help distribute her duties.

But in true form, it didn't take long for Her Majesty to remerge and once again take charge of the monarchy she has held so dear for nearly 70 years.
