Queen Elizabeth spends the night in hospital after cancelling trip

Queen Elizabeth has spent the night in hospital after cancelling a planned trip to Northern Ireland following doctor's advice.

"Following medical advice to rest for a few days, The Queen attended hospital on Wednesday afternoon for some preliminary investigations, returning to Windsor Castle at lunchtime today, and remains in good spirits," a Buckingham Palace spokesperson has said.

This comes after Her Majesty "reluctantly" cancelled her trip citing doctor's advice.

At the time a Palace spokesperson said: "The Queen has reluctantly accepted medical advice to rest for the next few days.

"Her Majesty is in good spirits and is disappointed that she will no longer be able to visit Northern Ireland, where she had been due to undertake a series of engagements today and tomorrow.

"The Queen sends her warmest good wishes to the people of Northern Ireland, and looks forward to visiting in the future."

Queen Elizabeth, 95, has been seen driving her Landrover and walking her dogs on her Windsor estate on Wednesday before being admitted into hospital overnight.

UK newspaper The Mirror reported Her Majesty was "showing slight signs of a seasonal cold". Her ill health is not believed to be COVID-19 related.

The publication reports Her Majesty, who has had quite a number of public engagements already this month, was reportedly feeling "a little tired" on Tuesday evening after hosting a reception at Windsor Castle for the Global Investment Summit.

It's understood royal doctors were called to Her Majesty's living quarters, after which they ordered a period of rest.
