Decision for Prince Harry to wear military uniform to Queen's vigil was 'at the King's request'

The decision to allow Prince Harry to wear military uniform for Queen Elizabeth's vigil on Saturday, reportedly came from the new King.

Charles III is understood to have been behind the royal backflip, following criticism that the Duke of Sussex wasn't allowed to don military attire for any portion of events to lay his grandmother to rest, while uncle Prince Andrew could.

The duke will now join his brother, Prince William, in military uniform for the occasion after the pair walked side-by-side in different ensembles for the procession earlier in the week.

"At the King's request, they will both be in uniform," a Kensington Palace source told Telegraph UK.

The royals came under fire when it was revealed Prince Andrew has been given permission to wear military attire to the vigil, despite having stepped down from royal duties following an investigation into his dealings with convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

It was pointed out that Harry, having served in the military for 10 years including active service in Afghanistan, had more right to the privilege.

A source confirmed the change of heart to The Mirror, commenting that "common sense has prevailed."

"It was a ludicrous situation given the Duke of Sussex has served his country and is a highly respected member of the armed forces with everything he has done for veterans," they said.

"It is important that the Queen's grandchildren are all made to feel welcome and comfortable as they grieve their beloved grandmother together."

Thus far, Prince Harry and Prince Andrew have only worn morning coats with medals to events, next to King Charles III, Princess Anne and Prince William in full military attire.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been welcomed back into the royal fold following the death of Queen Elizabeth on September 8.

The family received the call that Her Majesty was in her final hours, boarding flights to Balmoral Castle in Scotland to be by her side.
