Queen cancels meeting with new PM after being advised to rest by doctors

Queen Elizabeth has been forced to cancel her first Privy Council meeting with new UK Prime Minister Liz Truss.

Buckingham Palace said in a short statement that the 96-year-old monarch had accepted advice from medics to rest after a busy day on Tuesday.

"After a full day yesterday, Her Majesty has this afternoon accepted doctors' advice to rest," they said.

"This means that the Privy Council meeting that had been due to take place this evening will be rearranged."

Across social media, royal reporters have been quick to point out that no hospital stay was involved and the Queen continues to be in residence at Balmoral Castle.

There have been growing concerns for the monarch's health over her summer break at Scotland, with Prince Charles visiting daily.

Her Majesty's on-going mobility issues forced the Queen to stay put at Balmoral and appoint the new PM outside of Buckingham Palace for the first time in her 70-year reign.

The monarch also for the first time skipped last weekend's Braemar Highland Games in Scotland, one of her favourite events of the year.

A Buckingham Palace source said on Friday the decision was taken with the Queen's comfort in mind.
