Princess Mary struggles to open beer can during UN Week in New York

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark has left fans in stitches as she struggled to open a can of beer during a visit to New York for UN week.

Mary, 46, pretended to grimace as she cracked open a can of Carlsberg, one of Denmark's biggest exports.

The event aimed to highlight her adopted country's achievements when it comes to sustainability.

After seemingly struggling to open the beverage, Princess Mary held it up for a toast before taking a sip.

Princess Mary's enjoyment of the event served as a reminder that she is and always will be a down-to-earth Tassie girl made good.

Princess Mary was born in Tasmania but moved to Denmark in 2001 to be with future king, Crown Prince Frederik.

There has been speculation she will be queen by the end of this year, which would make her the world's first Australian-born queen.

Since moving to Denmark, Princess Mary has focused on causes close to her heart, including sustainability.

"I believe that in order to find solutions to some of the most pressing global challenges of today we need to take a holistic approach that requires us to consider the social, environmental and economic aspects and work together in new and innovative partnerships, maybe with people and organisations we wouldn’t have thought about working with before," she told Vogue in 2016.

"It will require a continuous effort and patience, and strong and authentic leadership: it takes time to create real and sustainable change."

The Danish royal said she tries to use her platform to be as effective as possible when it comes to those causes, including the empowerment of women and their human rights.

Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik have four children together -- Prince Christian, 12, Princess Isabella, 11, and twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent, seven.

The royal couple will travel to Australia in October where they'll join the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the Invictus Games from October 20 to 27. Also arriving for the Invictus games will be David and Victoria Beckham.
