There has been plenty of discussion, since the passing of Prince Henrik of Denmark, as to whether Australian-born Princess Mary of Denmark could step into the royal title of Queen.

TODAY Extra quizzed royal insider, Camilla Tominey about the likelihood of Princess Mary becoming Queen and it seems it may be more feasible than you might think.

“It’s a tricky one because Queen Margrethe, who is mourning Prince Henrik, is 77-years-old and has been on the throne for 45 years,” Tominey explains.

Also, the royal insider reveals that there hasn’t been an abdication in the Danish monarchy since about 1532, so there’s no precedent.

However, many of the Danish people are thinking that Queen Margrethe will now be by herself and has also suffered some ill-health lately, and with Prince Frederik and Princess Mary being ever-popular, Tominey says an abdication is more likely than say, 10 years ago.

Tominey says the attention on abdication has been highlighted due to three recent abdications in Belgium, Holland and Spain.

Abdications are often very fluid transitions and Tominey especially thinks this one could be too, as Queen Margrethe would have full support from her public because they think she’s done a good job.

“Since they married there’s been a transition behind palace gates and now Prince Frederik has basically taken on a Prince Regency role while Queen Margrethe mourns her husband.

“So, he’s already in a quasi-Kingship role and Princess Mary is very popular and is a great ambassador for Danish culture, and supporting causes to combat issues such as childhood obesity and bullying, so she’s kind of fulfilling future Queen duties now too,” Tominey says.

If abdication does happen, Princess Mary would be a Queen consort (because she has inherited the title through marriage) and known as Queen Mary.

Although Prince Frederik would shoulder most of the responsibility, Tominey predicts that Princess Mary would have their four children to consider too.

Tominey is positive that Denmark is ready for an Aussie-born Queen.

“She’s popular with the country and Queen Margrethe. Also, Prince Frederik used to have a play-boy reputation and Princess Mary has settled him down and they have four children, so she’s representative of that next chapter of Danish Monarchy.”
