Twist in tradition as Princess Märtha Louise of Norway reveals dress code ahead of royal wedding

The wedding of Princess Märtha Louise and Shaman Durek Verrett has commenced.

Three days of events have been planned for the Norwegian royal's nuptials with one detail already standing out.

The royal is bucking tradition when it comes to the usually formal dress code for the pre-wedding reception, which was described as "sexy and cool" according to Hello!

The couple hosted the pre-wedding reception at Hotel 1904 in Alesund and will exchange vows at Hotel Union on August 31.

On Friday, guests will join Märtha Louise and Verrett for a boat ride along the Geiranger Fjord to Geiranger village, followed by a Latin American-themed party at Hotel Union.

The ceremony will take place at a church on the grounds of the Hotel Union followed by a reception on the Saturday.

The King and Queen of Norway – Märtha Louise's parents – will be at the wedding, along with her brother Crown Prince Haakon, his wife Crown Princess Mette-Marit and their children Princess Ingrid and Prince Sverre Magnus.

Princess Märtha, 52, and Shaman Durek Verrett, 49, announced their engagement in 2022. The couple met in 2019 through friends.

"We're very excited," the royal told Hello!. "It feels amazing to be marrying Durek and I'm so happy the day is almost here. The surroundings are gorgeous – it's one of the most beautiful places I know."

Princess Märtha Louise is the daughter of Norway's King Harald V and Queen Sonja and her brother is Crown Prince Haakon. She is currently fourth-in-line to the throne.

The couple has faced criticism over their relationship owing to their alternative lifestyles. Both work as alternative therapists and Princess Märtha has worked as a clairvoyant, written multiple books and has her own clothing line, Hést.

In November 2022, Märtha Louise confirmed she would no longer represent her father or the royal household.

Verrett is a a self-proclaimed sixth-generation shaman and author.
