The announcement has come as a surprise as the couple didn't share the news they were expecting their first child.

They shared the news on the same day Britain's Princess Beatrice shared the arrival of her second child with husband Eduardo Mapelli Mozzi.

Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi was born on January 22 at 12.57pm, weeks earlier than the spring (in the Northern Hemisphere) due date they'd mentioned in their pregnancy announcement last year.

But the mum and bub are said to be "healthy and doing well".

Princess Maria Laura named her son Albert, which is a traditional family name for the Belgium royals.

King Albert reigned over the country from 1993 until 2013 before abdicating for health reasons. His son Philippe ascended the throne.

The baby is 11th in line to the Belgium throne. It isn't known if he will be bestowed a royal title.

The children of Princess Maria Laura's older brother Prince Amadeo have been given archduke and archduchess titles.

King Albert attended Princess Maria Laura's royal wedding two years ago. It was the biggest royal wedding to take place in 2022.

The couple wed just days after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, with the couple paying tribute to the monarch at their nuptials.

The happy news comes the year after three generations of the Belgian royal family reunited for the 90th birthday of King Albert.

He celebrated the occasion with his family including his son, King Phillipe, and his granddaughter Princess Elisabeth.
