Heir to the Spanish throne makes history alongside royal family

The heir to the Spanish throne has made history alongside her royal family.

Princess Leonor, 17, stepped out to the National Day military parade in her military uniform and, in a royal first, took part in the salute with her father, King Felipe. 

Accompanied by her mother, Queen Letizia, the family unit took part in the events in the Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo in Madrid.

Crown Princess Leonor of Spain wore her cadet gala uniform of the Naval Academy in Marín while participating in the day's historic ceremonies. 

A day of firsts, the heir to the throne later joined King Felipe in laying a laurel wreath at the feet of the Spanish flag to pay their respects to those who tragically lost their lives while serving the country. 

After the military parade, the father-daughter-duo journeyed to the Royal Palace of Madrid to join the traditional commemorative reception.

Many Spanish publications, including Hola! Spain reported that the young royal later joined her parents in the Throne Room for the first time. 

Princess Leonor pledged her allegiance to the Spanish flag during last weekend's flag oath ceremony at the Zaragoza Military Academy. 

During the event, King Filipe said, "38 years have passed, and I think about what I felt then and what it means to me to preside - together with the Queen and with pride - the swearing-in of our daughter, the Princess of Asturias. 

"It's very exciting; and it is of great significance to see how today the Princess continues that oath with a new class of cadets.

"Feelings that we share with everyone here and with the great military family."

Infanta Sofía wasn't in attendance as she continued her last two years of high school in Wales, just as her older sister did.
