Princess Eugenie isn't a 'working royal', but she might be a working mum

Princess Eugenie may not be a 'working royal', but in the not-too-distant future she'll be a working mum, a new Daily Mail report claims.

Unlike royals such as Kate Middleton, Eugenie does not receive income from the monarchy to fulfil official duties, instead working full-time at a London art gallery.

Following the announcement she was expecting her first child with husband Jack Brooksbank, some perhaps wondered whether the princess would return to her career after taking maternity leave.

However, Eugenie reportedly has every intention of resuming her role as director of Hauser & Wirth, a decision the Daily Mail calls "thoroughly modern".

The youngest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York has worked at the Mayfair-based contemporary art gallery since 2015.

Eugenie, who has a degree in art history from Newcastle University, started out as an associate director and was promoted to director in 2017.

In a 2016 interview with Harper's Bazaar, Eugenie — who does some charity work and royal appearances despite not being a working royal — said she'd loved art since she was "very little".

"I knew I definitely wouldn't be a painter, but I knew this was the industry for me. I love being able to share my passion for art with people," she added.

"If someone doesn't understand something, you have the ability to suggest, 'Maybe you can look at it this way.' That's what I find most thrilling about working in a gallery."

In 2013 she moved to New York to work for an art auction site called Paddle8, causing her relationship with Brooksbank to become long-distance for two years.

The couple, who wed in 2018, will become parents in early 2021. The baby will be the ninth great-grandchild for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

The happy news was confirmed two weeks ago in a statement from Buckingham Palace and an Instagram post from Eugenie.

"Jack and I are so excited for early 2021," the royal mum-to-be captioned a photo of a pair of teddy bear-shaped baby booties.

It's not known when Eugenie will embark on her maternity leave or how long it will last.

The Duchess of Cambridge has taken maternity leave of varying lengths with her three children — five weeks for Prince George, four months for Princess Charlotte, and six months for Prince Louis.

The Duchess of Sussex also took six months of maternity leave to welcome son Archie in 2019 before returning to royal duties.
