The Belgian Royal Palace has shared new portraits of the heir to the throne, 21-year-old Princess Elisabeth.

Princess Elisabeth marked her milestone 21st birthday on Tuesday and the royal family released a stunning series of photos to celebrate the occasion.

"Elisabeth celebrates her 21st birthday today! What do you wish for her for her birthday?" the palace shared on Instagram and Twitter.

In the photos, the eldest child of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium is wearing a cream shirt, grey trousers and a pair of statement gold earrings.

Elisabeth, a student of Oxford College in England, is currently studying history and politics at university.

The future Queen of Belgium also earned her International Baccalaureate from the United World College of the Atlantic in Wales in 2020 and also spent a year at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels.

When the palace announced Elisabeth's plans to study abroad, the statement assured royal fans the princess would regularly return home to Belgium.

"The Princess will return to Belgium regularly and remain involved in Belgian public life," the statement said.

Elisabeth became the heir apparent to the Belgian throne in 2013 upon the abdication of their grandfather, King Albert II.

Once the young royal assumes the throne, she will make history as the country's first-ever Queen.

Belgium introduced a new act of succession, which ensured absolute primogeniture, in 1991, ensuring Elisabeth would one-day be Queen as the first-born of an heir. She also has three younger siblings: Prince Gabriel, Prince Emmanuel, and Princess Eleonore.

In July, the Belgian Royal Palace also shared photos of Princess Elisabeth attending a military summer camp.

Elisabeth made history in 2020 when she attended the academy in Brussels.

As she celebrates her milestone birthday, her parents have embarked on a mini royal tour.

Philippe, 62, and Mathilde, 49, are currently in Lithuania for a three-day visit to mark a century of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
