Why you'll 'never' see coats belonging to the late Princess Diana go to auction

Throughout the years there have been limited opportunities to own a piece of clothing once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

But those with deep pockets have been unable to get their hands on any coats belonging to the late royal.

Later this month, the largest ever offering of clothing and accessories from Princess Diana's wardrobe is going under the hammer and like previous sales, there are no coats on offer.

That's despite Diana wearing an impressive collection of coats throughout her life.

And there is a simple, and heart-warming, explanation as to why you'll rarely see any of the princess's coats go up for sale.

Princess Diana's "generous" nature meant she was "always giving items" to those who needed them more, Martin Nolan, co-founder and executive director of Julien's Auctions, said.

"You never see a coat from Diana come to auction, because she used to get her butler or her staff or friends to drive around London, [in] January, February, [in the] freezing cold," he told People.

"She'd find homeless people, and she would give her coats away," Nolan said.

"That's how she was – without any spectacle or whatever."

Nolan is one of the team from Julien's behind the Princess Diana's Style & A Royal Collection auction will take place at the Peninsula Beverly Hills on June 26.

More than 300 belonging to the late royal are going under the hammer.

The auction will also include couture garments from the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, historic items belonging to Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother, and royal treasures dating as far back as the 19th Century.

The auction will include some of Dian's most iconic outfits, such as the 1988 Bellville Sassoon floral day frock, widely known as her "caring dress" because she often wore it at engagements involving children.

It is expected to sell for between US $100,000 – $200,000 (approx. $155,000 – $310,000).

Among the other items of clothing up for grabs is a Bruce Oldfield two-piece yellow and floral-patterned silk ensemble, worn by Diana on June 17, 1987, at Royal Ascot.

Its sale estimate is between US $100,000 – $200,000 (approx. $155,000 – $310,000).

A magenta nylon ski-suit belonging to Diana is expected to sell for US $30,000 – $50,000 (approx. $46,000 – $77,000).

A Lady Dior handbag, worn by Diana many times including in Birmingham in 1995, is expected to be one of the highest-selling items in the sale.

It is likely to sell for US $20,000 – $30,000 (approx. $30,000 – $46,000).
