Prince William and Princess Charlotte send video message ahead of World Cup final: 'Sorry we can't be there'

Following days of speculation, Prince William has confirmed he will not be in Sydney to see England take on Spain in the FIFA Women's World Cup final.

It's the first time the Prince of Wales has addressed the growing calls for him to attend the historic game in person as Football Association President.

Sending the Lionesses a video message alongside daughter Princess Charlotte, eight, William said, "We're sorry we can't be there in person."

The video message, which appears to have been recorded in the backyard of the family's county home in Norfolk, was posted to the royals' social accounts on Saturday afternoon local time.

William wished the team "a huge good luck" for the big game, which marks the first time England has made a World Cup final since the men's team won in 1966.

"We're so proud of everything you've achieved and the millions you've inspired here and around the world," he said.

"So go out there tomorrow and really enjoy yourselves."

After the 41-year-old wrapped up his speech, Princess Charlotte adds sweetly, "Good luck Lionesses!"

It's not the first time the father and daughter have teamed up to send a video message to the team.

They also recorded a similar message ahead of the team's Euro 2022 final last July, which they went on to win.

The family will be hoping for a similar outcome later today as they cheer on, watching together from home.

It's understood Prince William chose not to make the whirlwind-trip to the other side of the globe while on official holidays, prioritising family time over duty.

The World Cup final will still have a royal element though, with Spain's Queen Letizia confirming her attendance at the event along with her daughter Infanta Sofia.
