UPDATE – – The Prince and Princess of Wales will make a public appearance on the first anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's death, leading the royal family's tributes.

King Charles and Queen Camilla are expected to commemorate the day privately at Balmoral Castle.

Prince William and Catherine were believed to working on a public message honouring the life and legacy of the monarch on September 8, but that has since been changed to an in-person engagement.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are likely to carry out the engagement close to their home in Windsor, The Telegraph UK reports.

By September 8, they will have returned from summer holidays to their Windsor home, Adelaide Cottage, as their children's school will have started back at school on September 6.

The Wales' family moved to Windsor last year and Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five, are now enrolled at Lambrook School.

The children were pictured being walked to school by the parents one day before the late Queen died at Balmoral Castle.

Yesterday, The Mirror reported that Prince William and Kate will use their tribute to the monarch to "look forward".

Meanwhile, Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, will "pay their respects to Her Majesty in their own way".

A source told the publication: "Her Majesty's passing was an event that truly signified the end of an era.

"The royal family has been in transition since then and following the coronation and conclusion of the summer holidays, there will be an expectation to see what is next."

King Charles will be at Balmoral Castle, in the Scottish Highlands, on the day and will spend the anniversary "quietly and privately", as has been previously reported.

His Majesty will be following his late mother's example, who always commemorated the death of her father King George V in private.

Each year the late Queen would spend Christmas at Sandringham, in Norfolk, and stay there until the anniversary on February 6.

Members of the royal family could still attend public engagements around the late Queen's anniversary.

But there are "no plans" for any public event or private family gathering attended by all of them, The Mirror reports.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will soon be joined by other members of their family, following the royal tradition of spending part of the summer at the estate.

"They will of course acknowledge and pay their respects to Her Majesty in their own way," a source told Page Six, confirming the couple "haven't received any information or invitation to plans marking the anniversary of her death" from the royal family.

"I know the palace has said nothing official is happening," the source said.

Prince Harry and Meghan will be in Europe for the Invictus Games which begin in Germany on September 9.
