Duke and Duchess of Cambridge share rare personal tweet in support of Ukraine

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have become the first members of the British Royal Family to comment on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In a rare personal tweet, signed by both Prince William and Kate — using her formal name Catherine — they shared their political views and support for Ukraine.

"In October 2020 we had the privilege to meet President Zelenskyy and the First Lady to learn of their hope and optimism for Ukraine's future," the tweet said.

"Today we stand with the President and all of Ukraine's people as they bravely fight for that future, W & C."

The couples met at Buckingham Palace while President Zelenskyy was on a two-day official visit to the UK.

Prince William stepped in on behalf of Queen Elizabeth, who was isolating at Windsor Castle at the time, during the pandemic.

Making the public tweet more extraordinary is the fact that the royal family are known for withholding their political views and showing a neutrality towards world leaders.

While they are the first senior members of the family to speak about the war in Europe, they weren't the first royals to condemn the attack.

Younger brother Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle shared a statement following Russia's decision to invade their neighbour.

"Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and all of us at Archewell stand with the people of Ukraine against this breach of international and humanitarian law and encourage the global community and its leaders to do the same," a statement on their foundation website read.
