Prince William's conversation with his children about privilege

Prince William says he speaks to his children about privilege, explaining to them that there are people who are "very fortunate" and those who need a "helping hand."

"On the school run, we talk about what we see," he told the Sunday Times in a new interview.

"When we were in London, driving backwards and forwards, we regularly used to see people sitting outside supermarkets and we'd talk about it."

The Prince and Princess of Wales are parents to Prince George, nine, Princess Charlotte, eight and Prince Louis, five.

In the interview, William also said there are plans for social housing to be built on property controlled by the Duchy of Cornwall, the private estate that provides income to the royal family in addition to tax payer funds, which the prince now controls.

He told the publication he plans to "start small" and if it proves viable, will scale it up.

"Social housing. You'll see that when it's ready. I'm no policy expert, but I push it where I can," he added.

He said he wanted to "end homelessness in Britain."

The cause is close to William's heart, as his late mother Princess Diana took him to a homeless shelter when he was 11.

He spoke of recent encounters with homeless people, saying the tends to buy them "a drink, food" in lieu of giving out money.

"I don't tend to give money. I tend to buy them a drink, food, something like that," he said.

"I find that when I'm walking around or driving past and see other people do it [give money], people don't even look at them.

"How many people stop and talk to somebody who is homeless? Very few of us."

William said while he understands some people don't see the point of the royal family, it is the work they do "day in, day out" that keeps them relevant.

"But the amount of causes, the interests, the dinners, the meetings, the visits, whatever it is, that we do day in, day out, throughout the year, we've always been involved in that. It's part of what we do," he explained.

The Prince of Wales has taken on additional duties since his father Prince Charles ascended the throne following the death of Queen Elizabeth in 2022.

He joined his father on horseback to lead the Trooping the Colour parade on June 17, and played a key role in King Charles' coronation on May 6.
