Subtle parenting technique that helps William and Kate raise the next generation of the British royal family

Royal children are almost always on their best behaviour, having been trained for it since the moment they're born.

In behaviour most parents dream about, the youngest generation of royals – most prominently Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis – are able to toe the line between being polite and showing off their personality to the public.

To parents' delight, royal expert Claudia Joseph has revealed to Fabulous the five rules that Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales stick to when parenting the future royals.

Catherine has some expert insight, says Joseph, gaining knowledge from her early years project on how to set up children for life.

She has also gleaned a lot from her own childhood.

"She came from a very, very stable, happy family home, growing up with her sister Pippa and brother James," said Joseph, "I think she has learned a lot from her mother and wants to replicate her happy childhood for her children.

"They're a very relaxed couple, and it shows in the way they are with their children."

The parents ensure their children "can let their hair down during their own time, and I think they behave like any other child does, with lots of banter and fun at home.

"I think Diana and Carole Middleton both wanted their children to have a very happy childhood, and Kate and William want their children to be brought up as much as possible like other children," Joseph said.

Catherine also makes sure to listen to her children's needs and reason with them instead of just telling them to behave. "Instead of just telling them to behave, she might say, 'Yes, I know it's tiring, I know it's boring, but you'll be able to go and have fish fingers in an hour,' or something similar," explained Joseph.

The royal also has a particular trick that she uses to effectively communicate with her children – a tip that has been hidden in plain sight for us royal observers, who have seen her do it countless times.

Kate makes sure to crouch down and get to the same level as her children when she wants them to hear her out, with many photos over the years showing this.

"You often see Kate crouching down to children's level and looking them in the eye, which is important for explaining what they've done wrong and listening to them," said Joseph.

"She and William are obviously very tactile; there are lots of wonderful pictures of them holding their children's hands, taking them to school, or on bike rides."

One thing that is clear even to casual fans of the royals is that the Prince and Princess of Wales agree that they will not use any negative discipline, such as shouting at them or even the "naughty step".

"They believe in explaining to the children what they've done wrong and why they have to behave well in public."

But of course, children will be children and they will inevitably butt heads. In the case of loud arguments, the children will be separated and scolded for their behaviour. But Joseph adds, "if stern words are needed, they're rare."
