Prince Harry lands back in the UK for Prince Philip's funeral

Prince Harry has landed back in the UK for the first time since his 2020 royal exit, following the death of his grandfather Prince Philip.

The Duke of Edinburgh died at home at Windsor Castle on April 9, just two months before his 100th birthday, and his funeral will take place on Saturday.

Nine's Europe correspondent Ben Avery told Today Harry landed at Heathrow Airport on Sunday at 1.15pm London time (AEST 10.15pm) on a commercial flight, and was met on the tarmac by the royal motorcade and police.

He has reportedly been taken to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, where he will isolate for five days ahead of the funeral at Windsor Castle.

This is the first time the Duke of Sussex has returned home to the UK since he and Meghan resigned as senior working members of the monarchy in 2020.

It is also the first time he will face family members in person since alleging racism and neglect within the royal institution during the couple's interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The Mirror's Royal Editor Russell Myers told Today Harry underwent a COVID-19 test before leaving the US, which came back negative, and will be tested again during his five days of isolation on days two and five.

It was originally thought Harry was self-isolating at his old home of Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace, close to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's apartment there.

Royal reporter Richard Fitzwilliams told The Mirror Harry will be keen to reunite with his family during this difficult time, and that this "show of unity" will be important to heal the rift he has with his family following the "very damaging" Oprah interview.

Meghan, who is pregnant with the couple's second child, will remain home with son Archie after her doctor reportedly advised her not to travel at this time.

Harry has reportedly been in touch with several family members including Prince Charles following his grandfather's death to discuss details of his return.

The duke will reportedly join senior royals for the funeral procession what will see key members of the family walk behind the funeral, as has been seen at previous funerals including that of Princess Diana in 1997.

During Prince Philip's four weeks in hospital earlier this year, it was reported Harry was self-isolating at his home in California in case he needed to urgently return home.

Only 30 people will be able to attend Prince Philip's funeral due to coronavirus restrictions and in keeping with the late royal's wishes for a "no fuss" funeral.

Buckingham Palace has announced a national minute's silence will mark the start of the service at 3pm UK time on Saturday (midnight AEST).

The ceremonial funeral will be held at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle.

The arrangements, which "very much" reflect Prince Philip's wishes, have been adapted in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

Harry and Meghan paid tribute to the duke following his death, replacing the home page of Archewell with a message that read: "In loving memory of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. 1921-2021.

"Thank you for your service. You will be greatly missed."
