Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have appeared in a new video as they surprised an award recipient with the news she was receiving a $US100,000 grant from their foundation for her ground-breaking work in AI.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex presented the NAACP – Archewell Foundation Digital Civil Rights Award to recipient Dr. Joy Buolamwini, and shared a video on their website.

"You won!" Meghan says in the clip as Buolamwini seems taken aback by the news.

"Y'all got me good," she replied as the pair hugged.

The surprise appeared to have taken place at the SXSW Conference in Austin, Texas, where the duchess also appeared on a panel.

In the clip, Meghan said: "She is an expert and inspiration and is so deserving of this honour and many more."

Buolamwini is the founder of the Algorithmic Justice League, which, according to Archewell, aims to "overcome racist and sexist biases in artificial intelligence systems".
