Royal family reportedly 'split' over inviting Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to King Charles' coronation

King Charles wants Prince Harry to attend his coronation in May, according to new reports, but his and Meghan Markle' attendance could cause more "issues" for the royal family.

Several outlets have claimed that Harry is in "talks" with senior royals about attending the landmark event and the "terms and conditions" of his return to the UK.

"The family is split, and all the indications are that Harry is being advised to agree to nothing at this stage and 'play it long' right up to the last minute, which is making negotiations with him very difficult," a source told the Daily Mail.

It's been reported that key royals and palace officials want to minimise the media focus on the couple, who have been the source of much scandal lately, ahead of the coronation.

Ever since the Queen's death in 2022, there has been speculation about whether the Sussexes would be invited to the King's coronation - and if they would even accept one.

Though the royal family has made no official statements about the couple's attendance yet, senior royals are said to already be in talks about the "terms and conditions" of a reunion.

"Harry's camp made clear that the idea that he would just attend the Coronation and behave himself but then be stripped of his titles was a total non-starter," the source added.

There has been speculation that the King could strip the Duke and Duchess of Sussex of their titles following his coronation, after they lost their HRH titles in their 2020 royal exit.

The source noted that Harry may decide to relinquish his royal titles "of his own volition" in due time, but "objects to the idea of being forcibly stripped of them" like Prince Andrew was.

Harry does not want to be "lumped together" with his disgraced uncle, they claimed - though Andrew is expected to be present at the coronation in May.

Even if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not attend the coronation, their absence could cause just as many issues on King Charles' big day.

"Plans are already up and running for coronation coverage at the BBC, including the profile on the monarch," an insider told The Mirror, adding that the BBC is angling for a tell-all interview with the King.

The source continued: "Even one small comment on Harry and Meghan would make worldwide news… it could also prompt a response from Harry, which would be unpredictable, like so much. Everything is very delicate."

If the monarch agreed to the interview, he would be able to publicly address many of the couple's latest about himself and the monarchy.

Their Harry & Meghan Netflix series contained several unflattering allegations about the royal family, as did the Duke of Sussex's memoir, Spare.

Jonathan Dimbleby, a longtime friend of the King, would reportedly host the interview and the focus would be on the King's life, work and the royal coronation on May 6.

Though the senior royals have always been diplomatic in their responses to press questions about Harry and Meghan, anything they do say usually makes headlines.

The other option is for the royal family to pre-record interview footage to release to the media ahead of the coronation.

"It allows control over what is said and would not address the Sussexes," the source added.

Lambeth Palace and Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the reports.
