Prince Edward continues Prince Philip's work in Kenya

While his wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, is on a working trip to New York, Prince Edward has visited Kenya to support his late father Prince Philip's work.

The Earl of Wessex met with a group of young people who are among the 40,000 currently taking part in The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award in Kenya.

Wearing what appeared to be an Akubra hat, the 58-year-old heard first-hand about the positive impact taking part in the scheme was having on them.

But perhaps the most poignant moment on the visit was a tree-planting ceremony in Aberdare Open Fields, close to Treetops — where Queen Elizabeth received the news of her accession 70 years ago.

The Earl of Wessex planted the tree to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee this year and it's one of 30,000 trees planted in Kenya by Duke of Edinburgh International Award gold participants.

The Earl then met 100 young Kenyans from various universities to hear about innovation and entrepreneurship in Kenya, as part of a youth dialogue hosted by Dedan Kimathi University of Technology.

The awards were founded by Prince Philip in 1956 and Prince Edward earned his gold award in 1986.

In 2015, Prince Edward was named chairman of the Trustees of The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Foundation and continues to champion his father's work around the Commonwealth.
